This session offers an innovative reading of a foundational rabbinic narrative portraying learning relationships between Rabbi Yochanan and Resh Lakish. It suggests that Havruta (paired) learning can be destructive when reduced to narrow considerations of effectiveness while ignoring its ethical/spiritual dimensions, and helps us to think in more complex ways about relationships in learning.
